It’s the summer of 1892 on the sleepy East End but four profound events, with worldwide implications, would soon wake the area up and put Hampton Bays and Shinnecock Hills in the worldwide lens of history. Both the Shinnecock Golf Clubhouse and the Shinnecock Canal were unveiled, Impressionist painter William Merritt Chase established his revolutionary art school, and boxing champion John L. Sullivan trained at the Canoe Place Inn for the “Fight of the Century,” attracting legions of press from around the country. Take a trip back in time with Terrence Lavin as he brings to life a glorious summer of progress, creativity, and sheer grit, right in our own backyards.
