The Hamptons and the influence of Canoe Place Inn from 1900-1950

From the parties to politics, fashion, sports, charity balls and celebrities, Canoe Place Inn was the scene to be seen in. Author and historian Terrence Lavin is back with the dish and décor before and after the fire of 1921. Politicians, from Roosevelts to Kennedys, parties for Vanderbilts, Hearsts and even Henry Ford (wonder what he drove?) and sports legends like Lou Gehrig, Jack Dempsey and Babe Ruth all stayed here. We were ‘In like Flynn’ with Errol, Gary Cooper and Einstein. So in a way, it will be rocket science. Lavin promises a “deep dive into the period that will enrich with color and significance.” You had us at Cary Grant. Don’t miss this one.

A Cup of Jo: Monthly Evenings at Canoe Place with Joanne Heyman

The Art of Disagreement

We think of disagreement as negative, but there is a very real opportunity to reframe it as not only something positive, but even essential! Every great idea is just a spectacular disagreement with some other great idea! In fact, intelligent disagreement is the lifeblood of any thriving society. When we think of disagreement as a dialogue, or a health debate we enter the conversation with a different mindset and potentially a different set of goals. Now, in our polarized society, we see disagreement as the beginning of an end instead of an opening to learning and growth. And possibly even alignment.

Complimentary wine will be served. Each monthly series is $20, Use code CupofJoeSeries and pay $75 for all 5 sessions.

They Don’t Make ‘Em Like This Anymore

Author Foster Hirsch Joins Front Row with his book “Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties”

It was a time of the atomic bomb, blacklisted talent, Cinerama and the birth of television. And Hollywood was not ready for all its close-ups. In his new book, Brooklyn College Film History teacher Foster Hirsch ‘plots’ the fall of the studio system, the Cold War, and the boom of post World War II. Many of the movies reflected seismic shifts in the Left Coast. But no one could have foreseen the revolution that was coming. Often in something called VistaVision. For lovers of movies and because Canoe Place has often hosted some of Hollywood’s biggest names, this is a night not to be missed.

A book signing will follow the presentation.
